Artificial nail extensions are nail coatings applied over natural nails. They provide protection for the natural nails especially if the latter are weak and sensitive.

1- Some Current Main Components Used:

  • HEMA: Used in nail enhancement products to build or lengthen the nail, HEMA is safe to use with some restrictions that include the fact that it has to be labeled and warn customers to avoid skin contact.
  • Color Additives: In case you are wondering where does the blue in your eyeliner or the pink in your blush are coming from, here is your answer. Color additives provide to consumers all the appealing colors they will find in their products, even in contact lenses. These ingredients come basically as dyes, pigments or other textures to impact the color when added to other substances.
  • Benzoyl Peroxide: This ingredient comes in the form of a white powder that is usually used in over the counter drug products to treat acne. It is also used as a chemical initiator in nail products.
  • Ethyl Methacrylate: This ingredient is a white colorless substance that is used as an artificial nail builder. The CIR Expert Panel reviewed the scientific data and concluded that Ethyl Methacrylate was safe for use in the formulation of artificial nail products when accompanied by directions to avoid skin contact because of the possibility of an allergic id used in large portions.
  • PEG-4 Dimethacrylate: This ingredient is used in nail enhancement products to lengthen or build the nail. It comes in the form of small chemical compounds and is used as an adhesive or restorative material.

2- Some Current  Hazardous Components to Avoid:

  • Color Additives:  In case you are wondering where does the blue in your eyeliner or the pink in your blush are coming from, here is your answer. Color additives provide to consumers all the appealing colors they will find in their products, even in contact lenses. These ingredients come basically as dyes, pigments or other textures to impact the color when added to other substances. They are usually considered to be safe except from some colors.
  • Acrylic: Also known as perspex, acrylite, or lucite, those constitute fake nails that can be used instead of the natural ones. They were known to weaken the nails as they don’t allow the natural nails to breathe under the coating.
  • HEMA: Used in nail enhancement products to build or lengthen the nail, HEMA is safe to use with some restrictions that include the fact that it has to be labeled and warn customers to avoid skin contact.

3- Natural Alternatives:

  • Gel: This is one safe alternative if you want to have longer and stronger nails with less risk of weakening the natural ones. Gels, unlike acrylic, come in nail polish shades and have a hard or strong texture because they were exposed to UV or LED.
